BSC vs Berry College on 13 November 2010 at Berry College

Our last game of the 2010 season was a emblematic of our entire season. It was a tale of 2 halves and poor decisions that has been our achilles heel all season. The first half was a pretty good example of our ability to play good soccer, but not be able to convert our chances when they presented themselves. We played with a lot of intensity and emotion, but could not score, which has been the norm for this season. The half ended with the score 0:0.

The 2nd half began and we started ok, but in the 57th minute, we had a very senseless foul about 45 yards out. It was a nonsense foul, but in a harmless area of the field. Well it should have been a harmless area, but I forgot how the last 5 goals were scored on us. They were all on set pieces from corner kicks or free kicks from 30 or more yards out. So, this would be another goal scored from 45 yards out against us by not concentrating on what is our purpose. They scored their 2nd goal in the 85th minute on a served ball into the box that we did not make the play on.

The game would end with the final score BSC 0, Berry 2. In concluding this season, there are a few things I must discuss. First, it certainly was not what anyone expected this season to be. We had such a positive start to the season, that we felt it would be a great year. Things started unraveling in our 3rd game, but actually, it was noticed during pre-season in August, that something was not right on this team. It lacked the most important aspect of any team...chemistry. All the ingredients just did not mix into a common mixture. I thought after our first 2 games, we had found the missing mixture, but unfortunately, it just did not stay mixed for long. Why and for what reason, I can not tell you. Today showed that extremely well. As Im said, a tale of 2 halv es and of the entire season. We just did not have the strong leadership we needed on the field. We told them that once they were in the locker room and on the field between the white lines it was business and not personal. Out of the locker room and outside the white lines it is personal. We just could not see the difference between the two. We were a very good team from the back to the final third, but once in the final third, we could not excell as we had in the past.

The second thing I must discuss as I wind up our 2010 season blog, is to thank the 6 seniors for their honor, loyalty, integrity and character in coming to this program in 2007, knowing they would never be able to play for any championship or post season play because of our being ineligible due to NCAA compliance restrictions. That tells you what kind of people they are and for that I will be forever grateful. They have set the table for all the players that have come after them to establish a tradition in our new division. They are all unselfish, honorable young men, tat should be very proud of what they have helped to establish in our program going forward. The seniors to be thanked are, Shachar Hovan, Kenan LeParc, Carter McLean, Andrew Shelton, Andrew Stein and Tim Tincher. To each of you, thank you from the bottom of my heart!

BSC vs Sewanee on 7 November 2010 at BSC

Today, we played an old rival in Sewanee. We cwertainly appeared to be heading in the right direction at the start of the game, by scoring an early goal. Sean Head scored in the 4th minute, off an assist fron Brynjar Arnason to make the score BSC 1, Sewanee 0. We all thought this would bethe beginning of really good things that were going to happen in this game. But, once again, poor mistakes led to their first corner and first goal. We had possession going forward in the middle third of the field and were pushing forward, then we played a poor pass right to them and they counter attacked and got the corner. They played it in and another poor clearance and a shot that hit the post and bounced off our keeper's back into the goal, in the 23rd minute. That made the score 1:1. I just can not believe at this point in our season, we still have no purpose in what we are trying to accomplish. We either play poor passes or ill timed passes and lose possession immediately. It wasn't that Sewanee made these happen with any kind of pressure, as we just did it on our own.

We scored our 2nd goal just before half, in the 34th minute, on a ball shot by Andrew Stein and Brynjar Arnason followed it up on the back side for his first goal of the year. The score now stood BSC 2, Sewanee 1. That is how the half would end.

We started the 2nd half and pressed forward, when Sean Head played the ball to the back side on a run from Jarred Brookins, who scored his first collegiate goal as well, in the 54th minute, to make the score BSC 3, Sewanee 1. However, in the 64th minute, Sewanee got another cornwer kick and again we left a man making a run into the box unmarked for their 2nd goal. BSC 3, Sewanee 2. In all actuality, we should have scored many more goals, but we just seem to either miss our chances with one pass too many, or shoot poorly. Our biggest problem today and basically all season, other than our first two games of the year, is that we have extremely poor passes, poor choices and absolutely no purpose in what we are trying to do. Our first touch has been an issue all season as well. But, I truly think our main problem, for wahtever reason this season, is that with no purpose or desire to excel, we lose all our passion and chemistry.

Before the game today, I left them a statement I wrote yesterday for them to think about and make some choice in which direction they wanted to go. I know it is very late in our season, but in my opinion, it is never too late to make a difference. I thought I would share this quote with all who dare to read this blog. It was titled " A team of Purpose or a Team of Individuals"? Here it is: "Each person must find a PURPOSE in order to be able to continue our TRADITION of the team beintg the Superstar, or you will continue to destroy it as Individuals! You make the choices, thus you can either Make the Difference or Remain the Difference! You Decide, 7 November 2010..."

We have our last game next Saturday, in Rome, Georgia against a very old rival and foe, Berry College. the game is at 3:00 PM et. I hope you will all come and help us and our seniors go out winners. Until then...

BSC vs Oglethorpe on 5 November 2010 at BSC

Well, the ineptness continues once again! We lost 1:2. The score at half was 0:0. Both of their goals came off freekicks from about 25 yards out. They were created by our lost possession in the defensive third and then a bad foul. They scored the 1st goal in the 58th minute and we came right back 1 minute later to tie the score on a penalty kick off a hand ball in the box. 8 minutes later we had possession and instead of clearing the ball up the field, we dribble into the middle, lose the ball and then foul. They scored again to make it 1:2 and that is how it would end.

I am having a difficult time understanding how we can continue to control games, yet lose because of bad decisions and bad choices. Just 48 hours ago in training, we worked on what they would do and we did it to near perfection. We worked on bringing the ball wide, playing give and go and then crossing it in for a goal. How they continue to revert to old habits is beyond my wildest imagination. I have never had a team of individuals before, but now I know what it feels like to have one. This team does not want to be a team, because they don't want to listen to what we try to teach. I guess the old saying of it is hard to break old bad habits is very true when it comes to this team. We can't even pass a ball properly, let alone make the right decisions about how to score, especially on free kicks. We had a perfect situation for our 94 play, but of course they did not read it. Unfortunately, we can't call time out and set it up. We must make the right decision in the actual flow of the game. But, unfortunately, we can't do that either. "You can take the horse to the water, but you can't make him drink, unless he wants to"! We just don't want to drink, we would rather watch and see if it will come to our mouths automatically.

This is the first time in 28 years, that a team has beaten us on 2 freekicks. This is truly a year of first or rather bad firsts. Previous BSC teams would have put Oglethorpe in their pockets and said watch how many goals we will beat you, as we toy with them.

Oh well, on to our next game this Sunday at 2:00 PM against an old rival in Sewanee. It will be interesting to see what we come up with next. Will it be another game of bad firsts or will it be something special to build on? Come out and see what happens if you dare....

BSC vs Rhodes College at Memphis, TN on 31 October 2010

Before I write about the details of our game with Rhodes College, I would like to personally thank all our parents who were at our game today. They were Mrs.Shivers and daughters, the McLean's, the Hunt's, The Drs. Gonzalez, Dr. Evans. the Levinson's, the Crocker's and the Stein's. I would also like to especially thank two of our very loyal alumni for coming out to support our team today. They are Gary Shanks, 1993 and Daniel Feig, 2000. It is always so special for our guys to see former players supporting them. It further exemplifies the fact, that we truly are a family. So, thank you all for being there for us today.

Now, on to the game. We felt like we controlled the possession throughout the game, but once again, could not find the back of the net in the first half. The score at half was BSC 0, Rhodes 0. Six minutes into the second half, Rhodes had a free kick to the left of the goal. They had been setting illegal picks in the box all game and this was no different. The ball was played in and a pick was made and they headed the ball in for the goal. BSC 0, Rhodes 1. We still had plenty of time to compose ourselves and get the equalizing goal. We had plenty of chances, but just could not get the ball to fall for us. In the 81st minute, we played the ball wide and got a corner kick. Andrew Shelton took the corner and Sean Head headed home the tying goal. BSC 1, Rhodes 1. We continued pressing the game, but it would end 1:1 in regulation. So, we now moved to sudden victory overtime for the 4th time this season. We had some great chances, but, the game would end BSC 1, Rhodes 1 to make our current record look like 4 wins 7 losses and 4 ties. We have 2 other seasons where we had 4 ties and that was in 1988 & 2003. Looking back on all these ties, our record at the moment could just have easily been 8 wins and 7 losses or at worst should have been 7 wins, 7 losses and 1 tie. Regardless, we have fought hard in all 4 of our ties and certainly deserved a better result thajn just a tie. This game was a terrific comeback for us and here is why I say that. I normally never complain about the officiating, but today was different. It was without question the most biased officials I have ever witnessed in 28 years of coaching. It was so obvious and blatant, that I received a yellow card for arguing on behalf of our players. They were diving without contact and getting every call, not to mention we had a player get his nose broken and others get continually kicked in the legs and have their shirts pulled and we received no calls We had a player go towards goal and was taken down by their last defender and not only did we not get the foul, they did not receive the appropriate red card by rule for that infraction. We never could catch a break during this game and it has been that way all season.

I am extremely proud of our team for fighting till the end, while playing against 14 people. It is hard enough to win, when the sides are even, but adding 3 biased officials to the mix, makes it nearly impossible. We just need to catch a break in our last 3 games and we will be successful.

Again, thank you alumni and parents for supporting us. I hope we will see everyone at our last 2 home games this coming Friday night at 8 PM against Oglethorpe University, where we will also honor our Seniors and on Sunday at 2PM against Sewanee.

BSC vs Hendrix at Conway, AR, 29 Oct 2010

Well, welcome back to reality! Our mistake free game of a week ago, did not last, as we lost on the road to Hendrix College 2:3. The mistakes this game were different from what had been happening this season, but not unlike what happened in the 2008 season. We decided to revert back to 2008 and the inability to clear a ball properly out of our defensive third. That is how all 3 goals scored by Hendrix manifested itself. Their 1st goal came in the 10th minute on a penalty kick. It began with a very poor clearance out and the ball was sent back in and a foul of pushing was called for the penalty kick inside the box. They converted and the score was 0:1. Their 2nd goal came in the 23rd minute on another poor clearance that did not clear the box and the ball was sent back post and they scored. The score is now 0:2. The 3rd goal came in the 35th minute, again on a poor clearance wide and the ball sent back in for the 3rd and final goal of the first half.

During the first half, Hendrix dropped 8 players back in the defense shutting down our obvious passing lanes and out of that formation, they would play the ball long waiting on us to make mistakes that they could capitalize on. We certainly had the better of the possession during the 1st half, but had nothing to show for it. We should have known what to have done with this type of defensive style in the 1st half, but just did not react properly to what was available to us to draw them out of that packed defense. During halftime, we discussed what we should have done and what we now must do in order to get back into the game. We will now keep the ball wide and run 2 and 3 players diagonally to draw them out and open up the backside for some scoring opportunities.

The 2nd half began and we did just what we described during halftime and things started opening up on the backside. We kept possession throughout this 2nd half and completely dominated them. However, we still could not get the ball in the net. We had one shot off the crossbar and another cleared off the post. Still the score remained 0:3. With time running down, we finally got our 1st goal in the 76th minute off a ball played wide, a run diagonally and a cross to the back post for our goal. Andrew Shelton played the cross and Garner Shivers finished the goal. The score with 14 minutes remaining was BSC 1, Hendrix 3. We continue to press forward with the insertion of more attacking players, but could not get one in the net. Finally, in the 88th minute, another wide ball, with a soild run through and a cross from Tony Crocker to Garner Shivers for our 2nd goal. The score now stood, BSC 2, Hendrix 3 with 2 minutes remaining in the game. We had Hendrix on their heels and continued to press forward, but it was not meant to be. The final whistle was blown and the final score stood BSC 2, Hendrix 3.

We played a very good 2nd half, but it was just too little, too late. We gave everything we had in trying to equalize the score, but it was not meant to be. Hopefully, this will be a nice building point for our game on Sunday at Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. If we can play with the sense of urgency we had in the 2nd half of the game against Hendrix on Sunday, we should be able to prevail. That is our hope! There were some bright spots in the 2nd half and hopefully, that will carry over for the remaining 4 games on our schedule. But, I have learned with this team, that we must only look to a minute by minute improvement in making it a 90 minute effort. We must begin by playing each minute as if it is our last and build each one into a 90 minute game. If we do that consistently, we will be successful. We must also learn to be tough and determined against any and all opponents and not be "nice" guys to them. Each play is a "battle" and it is how we approach each and every "battle" of the 90 minute "war" that will determine the winner of that game or "war." You can play the game as "gentlemen", but we must develop an "attitude" inside the "lines" that no one will push us around, nor will they be afforded any "gentleness"
from our play. Now, after the game, we can become true gentlemen of the game and respect the result, either good or bad. This is what we must learn in order to have that "killer instinct", that is currently missing from this team. I must tell you, we are way too nice and not determined enough with that instinct that separates winners from losers. We will get there, but it must be now!

I want to also thank our parents who were at our game and say how much it truly means to have that wonderful support. I hope to see you all on Sunday. I do know a few of our Alumni will be at the Rhodes game and it will be nice to see them again.

So, until Sunday at 2PM, goodbye from the road,

BSC vs. Millsaps College at BSC Alumni week-end 23 Oct 2010

Welcome back...that is, back to what should have been our consistent way of playing. Unfortunately, this has not been the case for the majority of our season thus far. When we do what we are taught in training, we are very good and efficient, as we were last evening against Millsaps College. We won the game 3:0 and it was never in doubt. This is what we all had hoped would be the norm, rather than the exception. It was finally nice to see us playing our game of "possession" soccer for the majority of the game and controlling the entire tempo and flow of the game. We finally found a consistent Rhythm and it certainly made all the difference in our game.

We had worked very hard all week in preparation for this game by going back to our roots of "excellence through fundamentals". We did many shooting and movement off the ball drills and all these drills would show themselves throughout the game. The best part of this, was that we were able to recognize these runs and plays within the flow of the game. We led at halftime by the score of 1:0 on a goal by Nico Reitmeier with an assist from Sean Head. We stressed at halftime that we continue with our high pressure defense and possession game.

The 2nd half began and Millsaps switched to a 4-3-3 formation causing us a few minutes of losing the midfield, but the guys mad an adjustment and corrected what was happening and shut them down immediately, thus allowing us to gain control of the midfield once again. I was very proud of them for not only recognizing this, but making the adjustment to get us back in our rhythm. They are finally begining to get it. That is "Think" within the flow of the game! I believe we are making good progress at the moment and hopefully, it will continue for the remainder of the season. We scored 2 more goals in the 2nd half. Garner Shivers scored our 2nd goal, with an assist from Nico Reitmeier. Our 3rd goal was scored by Sean Head, with an assist from Brynjar Arnason.

Overall, we made a few line-up changes that we believed were necessary in order for us to get more offense in the game. I was particularly proud of them for making these adjustments and doing it with great determination and passion. If we continue to have another good week of training, I believe we will have a successful end to our season. That is our goal!

In closing, I would like to thank our loyal alumni who came to our game. These alumni are what our program is all about. It is about tradition, honor and loyalty and each of them have exemplied those values each and everyday they played here. The alum that traveled the furthest was Igor Ranitovic, who came all the way from San Francisco,CA. I was so happy and proud to have Igor here with us once again, as I was for all our alumni that came out to support "their program". Those in attendance that I saw, were Scott Berte, Doug Eckhardt, Trevor Cobb, Joseph Anthony, Sean Goldfarb, Martin Devaney, Scott Shelton, Matt Shuleva, Ross O'Malley, Luke Eldridge, Stephen Rumble and Hal Halbert. If I am forgetting anyone, I apologize, but those were who I saw. It is always great having our guys come back and only wish we had more in attendance. Maybe next year?

This coming week-end we travel to Conway, Arkansas to play Hendrix College on Friday evening and then travel down to Memphis, TN to play Rhodes College on Sunday afternoon. I hope we will see some of you at these games.

Have a great week, Coach G from BSC

Southwestern and Trinity Week-end Games 15 & 17 October 2010

I have waited for a few days to write this blog, as I really wanted to collect my thoughts on what has happened to us. I will try to combine both games into this one blog.

We started the week-end by playing at Southwestern University on Friday, October 15th. As our season continues to move forward, our play continues to move backwards. Why? I really have no idea what has happened. All I can say is that there is absolutely no "Passion" for the game, nor for playing the game the way we are certainly capable of playing. When you have zero intensity, zero want and zero effort, you can never be successful. It is such a shame for us to be in this situation, when we have on paper, the talent to win virtually all our games. But, if the want is not present at every training session, it certainly will not be present at the games. Somehow, someway, we must find our want once again, like we had in a few games this season.

Against Southwestern, we gave up 3 really bad goals once again. This seems to be our way this season. make it easy for our opponents to score and difficult for us to score. I am not going to go into detail on how the goals were scored, but suffice it to say, they were not developed by our opponent, but rather by us. No accountabilty is where we must change. When we make these same mistakes over and over again, we must take responsibilty for our poor play, that continues to beat us in every game. Until we do that, we will never become successful. We must become harder on ourselves than I am on each player and say, "I will not continue to make the same mistakes time after time". We lost the game 0:3 and we were never a threat to score in this game. We have now gone 445 minutes without scoring a goal. We left on Saturday for San Antonio to play against the number 5 team in the nation... Trinity University on Sunday afternoon.

Against Trinity, I was hoping for the same kind of "Passion and Intensity" that we had against Washington University (number 10 in the nation) and DePauw University (number 25 in the nation). Unfortunately, we had the same hangover from Friday in our level of play and lost 1:4. Last year, if you remember, we tied them 1:1. We had virtually the same team and Trinity did as well. They replaced their leading scorer to graduation with a terrific Brazilian player. So, again, on paper, this should have been a good even game. That was not the case. They scored 45 seconds into the game, just like Southwestern did to start the 2nd half. So, once again, we have a team full of lazy players that are just satisfied to be on the field. We have way too many players that feel "entitled" to be on the field regardless of their play. Well, that will no longer be the case. In the 2nd half, we saw some nice bright spots out of some players who had not played an awful lot this season. But, I can guarantee you this, they will start playing now. There is a core of players who in my opinion are only marking time and not really caring what the outcome of our game becomes. As per my philosophy, I will never single a player out in writing or in public. They all know who they are. Conversely, the players that truly care, know who they are as well. Our goal was scored from an outstanding free kick by Brynjar Arnason which their keeper saved and the result was a hard effort to win the corner by Jarred Brookins. The ball was played into Nathan Haywood, who headed the ball down to Tim Tincher for our goal. I was indeed very proud of the players who worked hard until the end and to those players, thank you!

Now, how do we change our poor play? Well, we are going to instill a new kind of pressure defense cfor 90 minutes against our opponent and not allow them to get into a flow. As opposed to allowing teams to make the game against us, we are going to make the game against them with our play. But, before we can start to do that, we must first find our first touch again and then be able to complete a pass to our teammates feet and then "Think" on and off the ball. the last ingredient before we can accomplish anything is to change our attitude and develop our passion again for the game we all love or used to love. Then we will start sprinting to every ball and to every space available to us throughout the game. Once we do those things we can become successful again, as I will not allow this to continue to destroy us. I guarantee we will see a changed team for the remainder of our season.

Our record now stands at 3 wins, 6 losses and 3 ties. We play Millsaps College on Saturday at 6:00 Pm at our field. Please come out and support us to a new and improved vision of performance with Passion!

Game against Centre College 3 October 2010

Today was another day in a long line of poor performances following a good performance in the previous games on Friday. We lost the game 0:3 and certainly deserved to lose. Our team has no idea what it takes to put 2 good games together and until we do, we are going to have a difficult time with the remainder of our schedule.

As well as we played for 110 minutes on Friday evening, that is how poorly we played today for 90 minutes. The score was 0:0 at the half, but we were not in our rhythm, as we were just hanging on. We had a few shots on goal compared to their one in the 1st half, but we just can not finish at all. This was the 3rd straight game where we have not scored a goal. When you can not get a good touch on the ball in the scoring position, you can never get a good look at the goal for a shot, or we do not do what we should do about finishing, because we react instead of thinking what we should do in the instant before we take a shot. We do not pass with any accuracy, nor do we pass with any thought. We unfortunately, try to turn in to our opponent and lose the ball or we dribble straight at the defender presenting him the ball and lose the ball and then get counter attacked. That is precisely how their first 2 goals happened. We lost the ball in the final third of the field and it was 2 passes and a goal. The 2nd goal came when we lost it in the midfield and were beaten on the end line to the back post again to an unmarked player for their goal. The 3rd goal came by beating our winger and defender for the goal.

Today, we quit before we started. There was absolutely no emotion, no sense of urgency and definitely zero passion for our commitment to doing everything necessary to make a positive outcome a reality. In my 28 years of coaching, this may have been the poorest effort of any of my previous teams. At least in our previous teams, they may have lost the game, but they played with great heart and emotion evertime they stepped on the field and our opponents knew it was going to be a battle for 90 minutes! This team does not understand what it takes to do those things even in defeat.

We played the number 20th ranked team in the nation on Friday night to a 0:0 tie and played a far inferior team today to a 0:3 loss. I sure wish I knew why this continues to happen. My belief is there is no leadership demanding better from the team during the flow of the game. I am extremely disappointed in the lack of effort today by our team. We did not deserve to even be on our own field!

We now have about 11 days off before we play Southwestern University and Trinity University in Texas. In order for us to have any kind of a chance, we must change our approach to the game immediately or it will be a miserable week-end. I hope this time off will be good for us, so we can collect our thoughts on what has been and what should have been.

Until October 15th & 17th...

BSC vs. DePauw University 1 October 2010

BSC 0, DePauw 0, in Double Overtime. It was the best performance of the year for our team, especially since we were playing against the 20th Ranked Team in the Nation.

We had not been playing well over the course of the season, especially since the Washington University game over Labor Day week-end. Our previous two games last week-end, saw us tie one and lose the other. In both games we did not deserve to tie, nor lose the one we lost. We had played fairly well and certainly well enough against those two teams to come out with a win and a tie. But, it was not to be. We had a very good week of preparation for this game against DePauw and I felt we had a very good chance of getting a positive result. We told our team, it was our home field and that we had to "make" the game. That is, we had to dictate to our opponent how we were going to play and not let them dictate to us how we we would have to play. We did that and more. From the opening whistle, we controlled the pace and play of the game. We put them under pressure and did not allow them to get into a flow. Finally, we found a great "rhythm" to our game and because of that "rhythm" we got into an early flow and balance and finally played "our" game for 110 minutes. We played terrific possession soccer, with many combinations throughout the game. We just could not find the back of the net. Scoring, something that has never been a problem for any of our teams, suddenly has become a large elephant on our back. We are getting good looks at the goal, but for some reason, we just can't seem to finish it off. We seem to shoot with very little purpose when we should be passing and we are passing when we should be shooting. This is happening in the final fourth of the field. Again, just like last week-end, we do not think nor analyse the situation before it occurs, thus resulting in poor choices in that final fourth. Our midfield play, which had been missing for the bulk of our games thus far, finally appeared and was in great synch with one another. They completely controlled the entire game with their relentless play. Their first touch was quite good and accurate for a change and the results showed quite clearly throughout the game. Our philosophy of play, is when you win the midfield, you control the game. We controlled the entire game and never stopped fighting in our effort.

We played with great "Passion" because our commitment and sense of purpose was present for the entire 120 minutes. I can't say enough about our effort and dedication to getting our game back on track. It was a game to behold and one to be extremely proud of being a part of. Every player made the commitment to be successful throughout the game, thus making the team the true "superstar". I said earlier, that last week-end we did not get a fair result, based on our play, in either game. In this game, we definitely deserved a better result than a tie. But, win, lose or tie, this game was what playing soccer is all about. Our opponent always looked to win balls off our mistakes and counter attack. They did that, but we never allowed them to get into a dangerous scoring opportunity. They played with all 11 players in our attacking half of the field, but we still beat them with our combinations and movement off the ball. It just was not meant to be that a victory could have been secured on the scoreboard, But, measuring victories, this was a complete game, full of many victories over the course of the evening and while the scoreboard showed a 0:0 tie after 110 minutes of play, we clearly were the victors, by our total domination of possession!

Sunday, we play Centre College at 2:00 PM at BSC. Please come out and support us. It does make a difference!

In closing, I am so very proud of how our team responded with a sense of purpose and commitment. I truly believe we are back and will continue with our style of possession soccer, played with great passion!

26 September 2010 game at Colorado College

Today, we played Colorado Colllege in our 2nd conference game of the season. We ended up on the short side of the scoreboard. We lost 0:1. The game started at 11:00 AM and we started playing pretty well. Due to the altitude, we made many changes in the line-up throughout the game. We were trying to keep our starters rested. Everyone contributed today and everyone saw some minutes that made the trip. We certainly had the better of the possession during the 1st half, but the score would stay 0:0 at the half. We tried to adjust our game a little, due to the altitude and it was working quite well. However, our first touch was not very good and some of our passes were not being played to feet. Rather, the passes were going to space or our opponents. We managed to remain tied until the 70th minute of the game, when a cross was played across the 6 yard box to an open striker on the back post, who tapped it in for the only goal of the game. The game would end that way.

The teaching point of this game and how the goal was scored would have been an excellent opportunity, had it not been for the fact that we cover this every day during our training and all our seasons. The rule is simple, we do not react, but Think! We are taught to never leave our men as a marking back or as a midfielder in the defensive third of the field. The situation that allowed this goal to be scored, is something we are taught daily. Our opponent got around the corner near the end line and had 3 options. 1st he could shoot, but he had no angle or chance of scoring. His 2nd option would have been to play the ball back towards his own 18 yard box to an on rushing midfielder or his 3rd option and the one he chose, was to play the ball to the back side to the open striker who was left alone, because our marking back left his man to react to the open man. He did not think, but rather reacted. Had he thought, he would have seen our keeper had narrowed the midfielders chance of scoring so he should have not gone away from his man. Our sweeper could and probably should have gone to the midfielder, but regardless, if he did or did not, the most dangerous man was the man that was left alone on the back side who ultimately got the game winner. We must learn to always read the situation in the flow of the game and to Think, rather than React!

In summing up our effort, I must say once again, we did not deserve to lose the game, as we played well enough for that to have not happened. Our next game is this coming week-end against DePauw University on Friday evening at 8 pm and on Sunday afternoon at 2 pm against Centre College. Both games are at home, so please come out and support our team, as we try to get back to our winning tradition...

1st Conference Game 24 September 2010

Today, we played Austin College to open our 2010 Conference Schedule. The game ended 2:2 in overtime. First, I must compliment our team on an incredible effort in today's game, especially after the dismal performance in our last game. It was a 180 degree turn around and I am extremely proud of this kind of determination and effort.

We began the game in a defense we had worked on all week and it was working quite well, especially in the 1st half. We had total control of the game in a rainy condition. We scored a terrific goal in the 30th minute off a great ball played to a back side running Sean Head from his central midfield position from Jarred Brookins. The goal was set-up by a hard run off the ball from Tyler Evans, taking his defender away, so Sean could make the back side run in an open position. BSC led 1:0. The score would remain 1:0 until the 41st minute of the 1st half, when a free kick from about 25 yards out on the right side was played over the wall to the middle of the goal for their 1st goal. The half ended with the score 1:1.

The 2nd half began and we went right at them and scored in the 47th minute on a goal by Nico Reitmeier with an assist from Garner Shivers. BSC 2, Austin College 1. The score remained that way until the 85th minute, when Austin College received a short punt from our freshman goalkeeper, who came in to begin the 2nd half and played the ball down the right side and sent the ball in and our keeper went up for the ball and caught it, only to fall and have the ball come loose from his grip and trickle in the goal to tie the game at 2:2. The 2nd half ended. We began the overtime period still controlling the game and then went to a 2nd overtime and the final whistle blew after 110 minutes of play with the score BSC 2, Austin College 2.

Again, this is the kind of effort that makes Champions! We must build on this effort and learn to stop giving up really poor goals and this season will be a great one for us.We will continue to work hard and make better passes to feet in a more timely manner, as we continue our defensive pressure. We now fly tomorrow from Dallas to Colorado Springs for another conference game with Colorado College on Sunday morning at 11:00 AM mountain time. If we show the same effort, we will be successful! Stay tuned....

2nd Consecutive Home Loss

BSC loses to Maryville College 0:2! This performance or lack of was emblematic of the training we have had all week long. The effort and desire was never present during the week, so it was never present during the game. We were chasing the entire game. Our passes and touch were awful. Either our first touch was poor or or passes were never to feet or just simply, never connecting with a teammate. Somehow, we continue to not pay attention to what we discuss and work on during the week, nor do we listen at halftime, when we try to make corrections to our game for the second half. We continue to be "reactionary" rather than "pro-active" and dictate runs off the ball. We just pass and watch and then react. Now, that is about 5 seconds too late.

Today was a prime example of playing the way we trained...very, very lazy, with no sense of urgency. This team lacks a true leader on and off the field. Not one player ever steps up to take charge of this team. We are somehow satisfied with "Mediocrity" instead of "Excellence". I am extremely disappointed in how we have been playing all week and I knew it would show the same thing in the game. You always play as you train. You can not turn your game on and off like a light switch.

The score at Half Time was 0:0. Then a poor decision in the back in playing a square ball in space to run on to and then that player taking 3 touches too many, led to losing the ball and then a back side run for their first goal. The second goal came on a corner to the back post, which we discussed in our pre-game talk and again we were beaten by a header on the back post to make it Maryville 2, BSC 0. Every attack we had ended in either a poor pass, poor touch or a poor shot!

We now have 11 straight Conference games, with 6 on the road and 5 at home. We begin our Conference play this coming week-end at Austin College on Friday at 4:00 PM and then on Sunday, at Colorado College at 11:00 AM mountain time. It is going to be a very long season, if we do not correct our attitude about training and playing. One does not go without the other. When some of our previous teams would have bad games, they would come out early and work on their deficiencies way before training was to begin. This team comes out to the field and either sits on the benches, tying their shoes, waiting on training to begin, or they come out and just stand around and talk. Again, it is a case of not looking themselves in the mirror and realizing how poorly they played.

It is time for each player to either become proactive in their approach to training or just pack in in and continue to play in mediocrity. It will certainly be interesting to watch as we try to prepare for this opening week-end of Conference games. Stay tuned...

Tournament Champions!!

We are Back-to-back Champions of the Kyle Rote, Jr. Invitational at Sewanee, TN!! Today, we showed we could play in consecutive days and play with intensity and emotion and not allow fatigue to be an issue. I am extremely proud of our team for the way we played this week-end. Not only did we win our 2nd consecutive game in dominating form, we had 4 players make the All-Tournament team and had both the Offensive and Defensive MVP's. The All-Tournament Team included Cory Gonzalez, Tyler Evans, Nico Reitmeier and Tony Crocker. The Offensive MVP was Tyler Evans and the Defensive MVP was Cory Gonzalez. They were all very well deserved awards. This team would not let the awful defeat last week-end affect them this week-end. We are starting to find our rhythm and flow. It is not there yet, but we are getting closer.

The scoring would be a lot and often today. The scoring started in the 23rd minute on a goal by Ingvi Georgsson, with an assist from Sean Head. 5 minutes later, in the 28th minute, Nico Reitmeier scored a nice header goal from a corner by Ingvi Georgsson. BSC 2, Huntingdon 0. That ais how the half would end, but BSC had toal control of the half.

The 2nd half would begin with a goal 4 minutes in, by Tony Crocker on a penalty kick. 6 minutes later in the 55th minute, Ingvi Georgsson would strike again with an assist from Michael Alfano. BSC led now 4:0. In the 67th minute, Garner Shivers would score off a corner from Andrew Shelton to make it 5:0 for BSC. In the 68th minute Tony Crocker would get his 2nd goal with an assist from Tyler Evans. BSC led 6:0, but Huntingdon would score 1 minute later to make it 6:1 for BSC. The scoring was not over for BSC, as Brice Hunt got his first ever goal and points in a BSC uniform in the 87th minute on an assist from Garner Shivers. BSC would win 7:1 to secure their 2nd consecutive championship.

Over the 2 day tournament, BSC would finally find the scoring touch that had been missing so far this season. They scored 13 goals and gave up 2. A terrific performance by everyone. I am most proud of the players that had not played thus far in the season for their effort and hard work in both games.

I believe we are on the right path at the moment and hopefully we will continue to build on this great week-end's performance as we move forward in the season. I am extremely excited about our prospects for an outstanding season with everyone contributi ng to the team's success. It is going to be a fun year, so get on board the train as it steamrolls through our opponents. You will enjoy the ride. I also would be remiss, if I did not thank all our loyal parents for being here this week-end supportin us. It was a great boost to our guys. So, thank you parents!

That's it for now and we will see all of you one week from today at BSC Soccer Park, for a 4:00 PM game with Maryville College.

Kyle Rote, Jr. Invitational at Sewanee, TN

Today, 11 September 2010, we played the University of the Ozarks at Sewanee, TN in their Kyle Rote, Jr.Invitational. It was a very good day for our team. After last Monday's debacle against Fontbonne, when we were upset 1:2 in an awful game, we showed a lot of character in how we came out today and played from the opening whistle to the final one. It was going to be interesting to see how we would react after our last game. I think we showed we can play with anyone when we play with intensity, emotion and purpose. We truly had "Tenacity of Purpose" today. I am very proud of our team for their poise and determination to prove to thmeselves, that the last game was fluke. We won the game by the score of 6:1.

We scored in the 4th minute on a nice goal from Tyler Evans from an assist by Kyle Sherrin. Unfortunately, the University of the Ozarks scored 1 minute later to knot the score at 1:1. Once again, just like our last game, we left a man unmarked on the back side for a goal. This is something we talked about all week in training, but we still seem to have trouble sorting it out on the big crosses to the far post. We will correct that, I can assure you! In the 18th minute, Kyle Sherrin would get what would prove to be the game winner on a nice finish on an unassisted goal. In the 24th minute, Tyler Evans struck again on an assist from Tony Crocker to make the score 3:1 for BSC. We would never look back. The half ended with the score BSC 3, University of the Ozarks 1!

The 2nd half would be a continuation of the 1st half. In the 58th minute, Nico Reitmeier scored with an assist from Tony Crocker to make the score 4:1. In the 77th minute, Tyler Evans scored his 3rd goal of the game with an assist from Carter McLean on a long throw-in to make it 5:1 for BSC. Our last goal would come in the 87th minute from 2 seniors who had never gotten any points in any game during their career. Kenan LeParc scored the goal on an assist from Tim Tincher to make the final score BSC 6 Ozarks 1!

This hopefully, will be the start of some good things to come from our team this season. I was very happy and pleased that every player got into the game today. We and they needed that. It is always nice to be able to play players who have been working so very hard all pre-season and in the early part of the regular season. I hope it will continue!

Tomorrow (Sunday) we play an old foe in Huntingdon College at 2:00 PM in the final game of the Kyle Rote, Jr. Invitational, in Sewanee, TN. Wed had a very nice contingent of parents at our game today and I understand we will have even more tomorrow. So, thank you to all our parents for their continued support of our team. We greatly appreciate it.

2nd game of Jim 'n Nick's/Puma BSC Labor Day Classic

Today we played Fontbonne University in the final game of the tournament. We have played them twice before, both times at their field and had never given up a goal and never lost to them. Well, today was a different story. We lost the game 1:2. Actually, that score was a fair representation of the game. We had no business winning the game the way we played today. I knew in the locker room, we were going to be in trouble. We had no emotion, no sense of urgency and certainly no real desire to do the things to turn our game around. Fontbonne deserved the win.

Fontbonne scored 4 minutes into the game, when our goalkeeper turned a 60-40 chance ball into a 50-50 ball after he called our defenders off. He got there late and could not recover to anything with the ball. Consequently, the ball came back out to their player who put the ball into an empty net. Score Fontbonne 1, BSC 0. The game was really poorly played by us and we never found any kind of rhythm or flow. Midway through the second half we had a nice cross in from the right side by Carter McLean and the ball came out to Garner Shivers on the 18 yard mark for a full volley into the upper portion of the net. Score stood BSC 1, Fontbonne 1. We hade plenty of time left to secure a victory, but we reverted back to sloppy passes and poor defending. We continued to dive in on defense and allow them to go by us without any trouble. In the 84th minute, Garner Shivers received a yellow card for dissent and then a red card right after that for alledgedly running into the ref. The video is clear that Garner was walking in a straight path and the ref moved to initiate the touching, if there truly was any touching. Probably the worst call I have seen in my 28 years of coaching here. Certainly Garner had no business dissenting at the ref for the call in the first place. One minute later, in the 85th minute and time winding down, Fontbonne had a corner and sentthe ball in to the box and it was headed in on the far post to an unmarked man for the goal. Score now Fontbonne 2, BSC 1. With less than 35 seconds to go in the game Fontbonne had a hand ball in the box and we were awarded a penalty kick. True to the way the game went and our play, we missed the penalty kick. Time ran out and we lost 1:2.Our record for the season, now stands at 1 win, 1 loss and 1 tie.

I really do not mind losing, as you have bad games sometimes, but what disturbs me and I really can not handle, is that we did not have any emotion or sense of urgency throughout the game. It appeared as if we really did not want to be on the field. We have got to find the players that played Saturday night again and those players have got to learn to be more consistent every game and then if you have a bad game, something good can still come out of it!

We are taking tomorrow off and will resume training on Wednesday in preparation for the Kyle Rote Invitational at the University of the South, in Sewanee, TN. Our first game is on Saturday at 2:00 PM against the University of the Ozarks and on Sunday, at 2:00 PM against Huntingdon College. In this tournament, we will not have a day to rest, so we must be ready to play back to back and play with desire, emotion and consistency. I hope to see you there.

Game 1 of BSC Jim 'n Nick's/ PUMA Labor Day Classic

What a game! BSC and Washington University played 110 minutes of great soccer to a scoreless tie. This is the kind of game which makes you proud to be a part of. It was non-stop action for 110 minutes. The score was tied at the end of regulation and remained tied after an additional 20 minutes of overtime was played.

We have yet to defeat this perennial top 25 team, always losing a heart breaker by 1 goal in the previous three games. Tonight was going to be different, we hoped. It had a different feel even before we played in our locker room. I knew this was our time.

The game started and we took control early with our possession. However, during the first half, it was not always our possession, but about an even game as we wound down to the end of the first half. Shachar Hovan had a tremendous diving save to his right on a very hard shot by Wash U. That would really be the only hard save he would have to make all game. Our defense settled in, as did our midfield and strikers.

At halftime, we knew we were in this game. We focused on making sure we took better care of the ball and to switch the sides of the field. In the first half, we played mostly on our left side. We felt if we could exploit the right side of our midfield, we could make some things happen.

The second half began and we did that, thus creating a few really good chances to score. We kept up the pressure, changing from very high to middle third of the field pressure. We tried to keep Wash U off balance a bit and it worked very well. We took control of the second half and our fitness began to take the game over. Wash U kept making a lot of substitutions, where we only made 3 changes to our line-up that started the game. We found a very good rhythm in our game, thus giving us balance and creating a great flow to our style of play. Forcing the play, we had 6 corners to their 2. We just could not find the back of the net. Sean Head had a great chance after the Wash U keeper mishandled the ball, but just put the ball over the goal. Kyle Sherrin had a great 1 v 1, but the Wash U keeper made a great play in shutting it down. We also had a free kick, just outside the 18 yard box and Tony Crocker took the shot, just as he did last year when he scored the equalizer at Wash U. However, this time the ball went just wide of the post. We continued pressing the game until the second half ended with the score still tied at 0:0.

We went into overtime and had the better of play, but could not score. Wash U had a free kick with about 1 minute to score and we stopped it and had a really good counter attack, but to no avail. The game ended at 0:0. In the final analysis of this game against such a great opponent, sometimes you must learn how to maintain the Tie and not do too much pressing forward, just trying to win. I remember the 1986 World Cup when Brazil certainly had the best team, but they only knew how to press forward on attack, only to lose on a great counter attack, thus preventing them from advancing. As I said, sometimes it is best just to make sure you secure the tie and not lose the game. We did just that and I am most proud of that decision on the field by our entire team!

What can you say about our players effort tonight, other than it was a performance that makes these kind of games so very special. As the game wore on, we seemed to get stronger and stronger until the final whistle blew ending the game. We are very fit and it certainly showed as did our system of play in controlling most of the game, especially in the second half.

I love playing against Washington University for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, I always enjoy playing against my coaching friends and Joe Clarke of Wash U is one of the finest coaches and a true gentleman. That leads to why we play them. It is a hard game with two teams playing "real" soccer and not kick and run soccer that most teams employ and I always know that not only will it be that hard fought game, but more importantly, it will always be a "fair" game. Both teams will leave the field knowing they did their very best and that playing in a game like that, is a very special and defining moment in their season.

Congratulations to Washington University on a great effort and game and more importantly, Congratulations to Our Team for such a tremendous effort. Our next game is tomorrow (Monday) at 1:30 PM against another old foe in Fontbonne University. We have beaten them the last two times we have played, but it is always a tough hard fought game. I know they will be ready to play against us and we must take the rest of today to recover and rest and be ready to play tomorrow in the final game of our Labor Day Classic.

So, until tomorrow, have a wonderful Labor Day week-end and please come out and support our guys as they continue to make all of us proud!

Opening game against Mississippi College

We won a hard fought game by the score of 2:1. Mississippi College is a very big and athletic team. Their counter attacks caused us some problems, especially in the 2nd Half.

We scored a nice goal off a great cross from Freshman Ingvi Georgsson to Garner Shivers for a terrific header into the goal. The score at half was 1:0. We pretty much controlled the game with our possession, but for about 15 minutes late in the 2nd half, when they put a lot of pressure on us and forced some turn overs in the middle third of the field. With about 16 minutes remaining in the game, they scored a very nice goal off a corner kick. The problem was, we had given them 3 straight corners and on the third one they scored. So with 16 minute remaining, the score now stood at 1:1. With 14 minutes left in the game, we had a beautiful play with Garner Shivers getting the ball on the right side of the field and taking it down the wing for a cross through Kyle Sherrin making his diagonal run and taking the defender away, which left Tony Crocker making a hard back side run to just tap the ball into the net to make the score now 2:1 for BSC. That goal came 2 minutes after Mississippi College tied the game.

I am very proud of our effort tonight, especially playing an opening game against a very difficult opponent. The most important aspect of this team, was they did not give up after Mississippi College tied the game. That shows the character of this team to not quit. They just kept on playing our game and in the end a good result happened.

Our next game is on Saturday in the Jim 'n Nick's/Puma Labor Day Classic. We play Washington University on Saturday evening at 7:30 PM and the finish the tournament on Monday at 1:30 PM against Fontbonne University. Both teams are from St. Louis, Mo. This should be an outstanding tournament. The fourth team is Sewanee. So, please come out and support our guys. They are going to make everyone very proud this season.

Opening game preview, September 1, 2010

Tonight the 2010 Birmingham-Southern College Men's Team opens the season against Mississippi College at 6:00 PM at BSC Soccer Park. We have just ended our pre-season training and hopefully, we will be ready for a tough game tonight. Mississippi College is returning 7 starters froma very good 2009 team. We must be ready for their attack and recover quickly on defense. I hope we will be able to attack their back four and create some scoring opportunities. We have a relatively young team once again and this year's schedule, should prepare these young players for the 2011 season when we are finally eligible to compete to go to the NCAA Tournament. It has beena long journey of NCAA compliance, but we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

We have had a very good pre-season in preparation for a very difficult schedule. We have tried to train everyday to be the best, by training everyday as if we were the worst. I will write again after our game tonight to let everyone know the result.
